Cookie Policy
Last updated: June 20, 2026
The short version
We use one cookie. It remembers whether you prefer light or dark mode. That's it. No tracking, no analytics, no ads. This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar technologies are used on ToolsKit, why we use them, and how you can manage your preferences.
A cookie is a small text file that a website stores on your device when you visit. Cookies help websites remember your preferences and provide a better user experience. However, not all cookies are the same — some are essential for the site to function, while others track your behavior across websites. We only use the former category.
Types of cookies used
Cookies are generally categorized into several types based on their purpose. Here is where each type falls on ToolsKit:
Strictly necessary cookies: These are essential for the website to function properly. Our theme preference cookie falls into this category. It enables the site to remember your display preferences and provide the intended user experience. Because we use only strictly necessary cookies, we do not require a cookie consent banner or popup.
Performance cookies: These collect information about how visitors use a website. We do not use performance cookies. Our analytics are conducted without cookies, relying on aggregate, anonymous page view statistics instead.
Functionality cookies: These allow a website to remember choices you make. Our theme preference cookie is the only functionality cookie we use, and it falls under the strictly necessary category because it directly affects how the site displays.
Targeting or advertising cookies: These are used to deliver advertisements relevant to you. We do not use any advertising cookies on ToolsKit. While we display ads through Google AdSense, we do not set advertising cookies ourselves — Google AdSense may set its own cookies independently, which are governed by Google's privacy policy.
What cookies we use
- Theme preference cookie: This stores your light/dark mode preference so the site displays in your chosen theme on subsequent visits. It is technically stored in your browser's localStorage rather than as a traditional HTTP cookie, but it serves the same purpose. This is a strictly necessary cookie for the site's functionality — it makes the site work better for you, not for us. It expires only when you manually clear your browser data. It contains no personally identifiable information, no tracking data, and no session identifiers.
This single storage item contains only a simple value (either "light" or "dark") and is never transmitted to our servers. It exists entirely within your browser's local storage.
What cookies we don't use
- No tracking cookies: We do not use cookies that track your browsing behavior, page views, or navigation patterns across our site or across the internet.
- No analytics cookies: We do not use Google Analytics, Plausible, Fathom, or any other analytics service that relies on cookies. Our analytics are conducted without cookies.
- No advertising cookies: We do not use any cookies for advertising, retargeting, or remarketing purposes.
- No social media cookies: We do not embed social media widgets that set cookies, nor do we use social login functionality.
- No third-party cookies: We do not allow any third-party services to set cookies on your device when you visit ToolsKit.
- No session cookies: Because we do not have user accounts or login functionality, there is no need for session management cookies.
- No cross-site cookies: We do not use any cookies that are shared across different websites or domains.
Third-party cookies
We do not directly set any third-party cookies on your device. However, some third-party services we use may set their own cookies independently:
- Google AdSense: When we display ads through Google AdSense, Google may set cookies on your device to serve personalized ads. These cookies are set by Google, not by ToolsKit, and are governed by Google's Privacy Policy. You can manage ad personalization through your Google Ads Settings.
- Cloudflare: Our CDN provider may set essential cookies for security and performance purposes. These are strictly necessary for the site to function and are not used for tracking.
We have limited control over cookies set by third-party services. We encourage you to review the privacy policies of any third-party services linked from our site.
Cookie consent
Because we use only strictly necessary cookies, we do not display a cookie consent banner or popup. Under applicable cookie regulations (including the ePrivacy Directive and GDPR), strictly necessary cookies do not require user consent because they are essential for the website to function properly.
If we ever add non-essential cookies (which we have no plans to do), we will implement a consent mechanism before any such cookies are set. You will be able to accept or reject non-essential cookies, and your choice will be respected. We will never set non-essential cookies without your explicit consent.
How to manage cookies
Since we use only localStorage and no traditional cookies, you can manage your preferences using your browser's developer tools or settings:
- Chrome: Open Developer Tools (F12) → Application tab → Local Storage → select our domain → delete the theme entry
- Firefox: Open Developer Tools (F12) → Storage tab → Local Storage → select our domain → delete the entry
- Safari: Open Preferences → Privacy → Manage Website Data → search for our domain → remove data
- Edge: Open Developer Tools (F12) → Application tab → Local Storage → select our domain → delete the entry
You can also configure your browser to clear localStorage automatically when you close the browser, or disable it entirely. If you block localStorage, the site will still work — it'll just default to light mode until you change your theme again.
Impact of disabling cookies
Since we use only a single localStorage item for theme preference, disabling cookies or localStorage has minimal impact on your ToolsKit experience:
- If you disable localStorage: The site will work normally, but your theme preference will not be remembered between visits. The site will default to light mode each time you visit, and you will need to select your preferred theme manually.
- If you clear localStorage: Your theme preference will be reset to the default (light mode). All other site functionality remains unaffected.
- If you block third-party cookies: No impact on ToolsKit functionality, since we do not rely on third-party cookies for any features.
Unlike many websites, disabling cookies on ToolsKit does not break any functionality, remove features, or prevent you from using our tools. Your privacy is preserved regardless of your cookie settings.
LocalStorage vs cookies
Technically, our theme preference is stored in your browser's localStorage rather than as a traditional HTTP cookie. LocalStorage is a web storage API that allows websites to store key-value pairs in your browser. Unlike cookies, localStorage data is never automatically sent to the server with each HTTP request — it stays entirely on your device.
This distinction matters for privacy. Cookies are designed to be transmitted with every request to a domain, which is why they can be used for tracking. LocalStorage data stays on your device unless your JavaScript code explicitly reads and sends it. Our theme preference script reads this value to apply your theme but never transmits it anywhere.
Browser Do Not Track signals
We respect the Do Not Track (DNT) and Global Privacy Control (GPC) browser signals. However, because we do not use any tracking cookies or analytics, these signals have no practical effect on your ToolsKit experience — there is simply nothing to opt out of. We support these signals as a matter of principle and good practice.
Changes
If we ever add more cookies (unlikely), we'll update this page and add a consent banner before any non-essential cookies are set. We are committed to maintaining our cookie-minimal approach and will always inform you of any changes to our cookie usage. Any new non-essential cookies will require your explicit consent before activation.
